Turisas is a Finnish metal band whose sound blends elements of power metal, folk metal, and symphonic metal, forming their distinctive style known as 'battle metal.' The band was formed in 1997 by Mathias Nygård and Jussi Wickström in Hämeenlinna. Their name is derived from an ancient Finnish god of war, underscoring their lyrical fascination with historical themes, warfare, and mythology.

The band rose to international prominence with their debut album, "Battle Metal," in 2004, which instantly became a touchstone within the genre for its epic storytelling and vigorous, anthemic melodies. This release was followed by "The Varangian Way" in 2007, a concept album that narrates the journey of Scandinavian warriors to Byzantium, showcasing the band's commitment to historical narratives.
