Miami University Steel Band

The Miami University Steel Band, founded in 1994 by Dr. Chris Tanner, has established itself as a renowned ensemble in the steel band genre. Under Tanner's leadership, the band has grown significantly, now comprising over sixty members and performing with a wide range of instruments. The ensemble is noted for its diverse performances, which include campus concerts, summer park venues, and in-school outreach programs. They have collaborated with esteemed artists such as Ray Holman, Tom Miller, and Liam Teague. The band has released several professional recordings, including "Burnin'," "One More Soca," "Simple Pleasures," and "Three Wishes," showcasing their commitment to quality music.

The Miami University Steel Band has achieved national recognition through appearances at prestigious events like the Percussive Arts Society International Convention and headlining the Virginia Arts Festival's PANorama Music Festival. Dr. Tanner, a prolific composer and educator, has been instrumental in shaping the band's success. His contributions extend beyond the band, as he serves as President of the National Society of Steel Band Educators, aiming to advance steel band education in the U.S. The ensemble continues to thrive as a leading program in the steel band world, dedicated to excellence in performance and expanding the genre's repertoire.
