Cantabile Regensburg is a mixed choir based in Regensburg, Germany, primarily made up of current and former students from the city’s universities, though it also includes members from throughout the community. Founded in 1992 by Christian Preißler, the choir has been led since 2002 by conductor Matthias Beckert, who is recognized for his expertise in both choral and orchestral conducting and serves as a professor at the University of Music in Karlsruhe. The ensemble’s repertoire spans from Renaissance works to contemporary choral music, with a particular emphasis on original interpretations and stylistic authenticity for each musical era.
Cantabile Regensburg has earned a strong reputation, marked by top awards at national and international competitions, such as first prize at the Bavarian Choral Competition and high placements at the German Choral Competition and the International Chamber Choir Competition Marktoberdorf. The choir is also known for its advocacy of contemporary choral composers, frequently premiering new works and collaborating with figures like Heinz Werner Zimmermann and Wolfram Buchenberg, whose choral pieces are featured on several of their recent releases. The ensemble has been honored with the Orlando-di-Lasso-Medaille, the highest distinction from the Bavarian Singers’ Association, and continues to perform at a consistently high level, regularly recording and sharing their music with audiences both live and online.
