Ronan Kernoa

Ronan Kernoa is a talented Franco-Dutch cellist and viola da gamba player, well known for his expertise in historically informed performances on period instruments. He studied at the Conservatoire National de Région de Rouen, where he earned first prizes in cello and chamber music, then continued his advanced studies in Paris and at the Royal Brussels Conservatoire. Inspired early on by his father, a musicologist and lutenist, Kernoa has specialized in baroque music and has collaborated extensively with several renowned European early music ensembles such as La Petite Bande and Les Muffatti. He has also co-founded the Belgian baroque ensemble Les Abbagliati and teaches in Namur and Mechelen.

One of Kernoa's distinctive projects is his ambitious recording of Bach’s Cello Suites, where he performs each suite on a different historic instrument, exploring a broad palette of sounds beyond the modern cello. This project highlights his keen interest in experimenting with the timbre and historical context of Bach’s music, offering a fresh perspective on these familiar works. His recordings appear on prestigious labels including Sony Classical, Ricercar, and Challenge Records, solidifying his reputation in the early music community.
