Onyx

Onyx is a seminal hip-hop group that emerged from Queens, New York, in the late 1980s, but truly stamped their mark on the music scene in the early '90s with their gritty lyrics, aggressive delivery, and hardcore beats. The group originally consisted of Fredro Starr, Sticky Fingaz, Sonny Seeza, and Big DS; however, Big DS (Marlon Fletcher) left the group after their debut album, and Sonny Seeza later departed, leaving the group as a duo. Onyx first gained critical and commercial fame with their platinum-selling debut album "Bacdafucup" in 1993, which featured the anthem "Slam." This track, in particular, helped propel them to the forefront of the East Coast hip-hop scene, ensuring their place among the era's most influential and memorable acts. Their raw energy, unapologetic lyrics, and distinctive sound contributed significantly to the hardcore hip-hop genre.

Over the years, Onyx has maintained a loyal fan base with their consistency in delivering hard-hitting music that tackles various themes from street life to social issues, solidifying their legacy in the hip-hop community. Despite lineup changes and the ever-evolving music landscape, the group has continued to release music and perform worldwide. Their recent re-recorded tracks and remixes such as "Wakedafucup (Anniversary Remix)" and "Shut 'Em Down (Re-Recorded)" show their commitment to their roots while also engaging newer audiences. The group's ability to adapt yet stay true to their distinctive sound exemplifies their lasting impact on the genre and their undying relevance in the ever-changing world of music.
