John Gunther is a Colorado-born saxophonist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist whose music effortlessly blends jazz, classical, world traditions, and electronics. He first picked up the saxophone in third grade, drawn to its shape, and has since built a reputation as a versatile and adventurous artist. After cutting his teeth at Denver’s legendary El Chapultepec, Gunther spent 13 years in New York, performing across the U.S., South America, and Europe—from Carnegie Hall to more unconventional venues. His work is shaped by a love of melody, groove, and storytelling, and he’s collaborated with jazz greats like Jimmy Heath, Ron Miles, Dave Douglas, Dewey Redman, Christian McBride, Bill Frisell, and Joe Henderson, as well as orchestras such as the Maria Schneider Orchestra and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra.
Gunther’s recent releases, including Painting the Dream, Ron Song, Elliptical Motion, and Tales From the Tank, reflect his curiosity and genre-spanning approach. He’s also known for leading groups like the John Gunther Trio and Convergence, and for projects that reimagine classical works and explore chamber-jazz settings. With a career highlighted by grants from the NEA and Meet the Composer, Gunther continues to push boundaries, always seeking new ways to connect with audiences and fellow musicians.
