The Exploding Hearts were a promising punk/power-pop band with a tragically brief career that emerged from the early 2000s Portland, Oregon music scene. Comprised of vocalist and guitarist Adam Cox, bassist Matt Fitzgerald, guitarist Terry Six, and drummer Jeremy Gage, the band was known for its energetic performances and hook-laden songs that echoed the rawness and melodic prowess of late '70s punk acts. Their debut (and only) full-length album, "Guitar Romantic," released in 2003, received critical acclaim for its catchy choruses, spirited guitar riffs, and heartfelt lyrics, channeling the spirit of their influences such as The Buzzcocks and The Undertones.
The music world's potential to see The Exploding Hearts' trajectory to stardom came to an abrupt and heartbreaking end on July 20, 2003, when their touring van flipped on a highway after a show, leading to the death of three of the four members, including Cox, Fitzgerald, and Gage. Terry Six survived the accident, and in the years following, the band’s music has gained a cult following, appreciating the fervent energy and poignant songwriting The Exploring Hearts managed to encapsulate in their short-lived career. Posthumous releases, such as the expanded and remastered version of their pivotal "Guitar Romantic" album and mixes like "So Bored (2023 Mix)" and "I'm A Pretender (King Louie Mix)," help ensure that The Exploding Hearts' enduring influence and brief burst of creativity continue to be celebrated and discovered by new generations of punk enthusiasts.
