Army of the Pharaohs (AOTP) is an American underground hip-hop collective known for its intense, hardcore raps and for drawing influences from both Eastern-themed music and ancient motifs. The group originated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was formed by Jedi Mind Tricks' MC, Vinnie Paz in 1998. The ensemble’s ranks have swelled and contracted over the years, featuring a rotating cast of renowned members such as Apathy, Celph Titled, Esoteric, and Reef The Lost Cauze among others. Their extensive network and collaborative ethos make them reminiscent of the Wu-Tang Clan's affiliation and expansive family tree.
AOTP's music is characterized by its aggressive style, complex lyricism, and cinematic production that often samples orchestral and epic music. They made their first official appearance with the release of "The Five Perfect Exertions" 12" in 1998, but it wasn't until 2006 that they unleashed their full-length debut, "The Torture Papers". Following this, they've released a succession of high-octane albums, with fan favorites including "Ritual of Battle" (2007), "The Unholy Terror" (2010), "In Death Reborn" (2014), and "Heavy Lies the Crown" (2014). Consistently active over the years, Army of the Pharaohs has maintained a strong underground presence, cementing their status as stalwarts of hardcore hip-hop with a dedicated following.
