Shibastik, whose real name is Chris G. Sutherland, is a multifaceted artist from the Moose Cree First Nation. Born and raised on the Moose River, his music and art are deeply influenced by his life as a Cree hunter in the James Bay (Mushkegowuk) Lowlands. Shibastik is a rapper, music producer, visual artist, athlete, and public speaker who has been at the forefront of Canada's Indigenous hip-hop movement since 1998. His work focuses on promoting awareness and appreciation for the land and First Nations culture, often addressing serious issues affecting his community through his lyrics.
Shibastik is known for his innovative workshops, such as "Healing Through Hip Hop," which combines music, art, and storytelling to promote cultural awareness and healing. He has performed and presented nationwide and internationally, including a TEDx performance in Thunder Bay. His recent single "Nishnawb Hip Hop" reached #1 on the Indigenous Music Countdown, and he has been nominated for several awards, including the Native American Music Awards and the International Indigenous Hip Hop Awards.
