Don Friedman

Don Friedman was a renowned American jazz pianist born on May 4, 1935, in San Francisco. His musical journey began at the age of four, initially focusing on classical music. However, after his family moved to Los Angeles when he was fifteen, Friedman discovered jazz and was particularly influenced by Bud Powell. He briefly studied composition at Los Angeles City College and performed with notable jazz figures such as Chet Baker, Dexter Gordon, and Ornette Coleman on the West Coast.

Friedman moved to New York in 1958, where he collaborated with both modern and traditional jazz musicians, including Eric Dolphy, Jimmy Giuffre, and Bobby Hackett. His first album as a leader, *A Day in the City*, was released in 1961 and received critical acclaim. Friedman was also an educator and had a strong following in Japan. He passed away on June 30, 2016, leaving behind a legacy as one of the progressive jazz pianists of his era.
