Dionisio Aguado

Dionisio Aguado y García (1784–1849) was a prominent Spanish classical guitarist and composer of the 19th century, renowned for his contributions to the development of the classical guitar repertoire and technique. Born in Madrid, Aguado's rise to fame came during a fertile period for the classical guitar, concurrent with the lives of other guitar virtuosos such as Fernando Sor, with whom he shared a close friendship and mutual influence.

Aguado is best known for his methodical approach to guitar playing and for his influential guitar tutor, "Escuela de Guitarra," which became a cornerstone in guitar education. This publication not only provided detailed instruction but also included numerous exercises and compositions that have endured as staples in the classical guitar canon. Among his compositions are works such as "Spanish Serenades," "Fandango Variado, Op.16," and the comprehensive "Aguado: Works for Solo Guitar," showcasing his mastery over melody and his inventive use of the guitar's technical capabilities. While his "Study in E Minor" remains a popular piece for training fluidity and expression in budding guitarists, Aguado's "27 Etudes" (アグアド・27の練習曲) compile a range of exercises focusing on diverse technical elements of the instrument. Aguado's music reveals a deep admiration for the traditional music of Spain, with works like "12 Waltzes" reflecting the dance forms and cultural heritage of his homeland. His contributions laid the groundwork for future generations of guitarists, and his sophisticated compositions have stood the test of time, continuing to be celebrated and performed worldwide.
