Alexander Faris

**Alexander Faris** (1921–2006) was an Irish-born composer, conductor, and music director whose career sparkled with theatrical flair and a love for light classical gems. Best known for his work on Gilbert and Sullivan revivals, he breathed fresh life into classics like *The Pirates of Penzance*, which earned him a loyal following among operetta enthusiasts. Faris also had a knack for reviving whimsical early 20th-century works, including those by Albert Ketèlbey, whose exotic soundscapes (*In a Persian Market*, *In a Chinese Temple Garden*) he championed with charm. Beyond the stage, he composed for TV and film, including the iconic theme for *Upstairs, Downstairs*. With a career spanning theater pits, recording studios, and broadcasting, Faris remained a spirited ambassador for music that was both elegant and delightfully unpretentious.
