Hail of Bullets was a Dutch death metal band renowned for its war-themed lyrical content and crushing sound. The band was formed in 2006 and was composed of a collaboration of experienced musicians, including Martin van Drunen on vocals, well-known for his work with Asphyx and Pestilence, and guitarists Stephan Gebédi and Paul Baayens, also from Thanatos. The lineup was completed by bassist Theo van Eekelen from Houwitser and drummer Ed Warby of Gorefest and later Ayreon.
Their discography primarily delves into the dark theaters of World War II, with each release often focusing on specific historical narratives. Their 2008 debut, "Of Frost And War," was a raw and powerful entry into the death metal scene, establishing the band's brutal sound and historical themes. Subsequent releases include "Warsaw Rising" (2009), an EP that continued to showcase their intense and unrelenting approach to the genre. Their second full-length album, "On Divine Winds" (2010), which recounted the Pacific battles between the US and the Imperial Japanese forces, was met with critical acclaim for its blend of historical storytelling and musicianship. The band's final studio album, "III the Rommel Chronicles" (2013), focused on the life and military career of German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, and further cemented Hail of Bullets' reputation as masters of war-themed metal before their eventual disbandment in 2017.
