Bobby Charles

Bobby Charles, born Robert Charles Guidry on February 21, 1938, in Abbeville, Louisiana, was an American singer-songwriter known for his pioneering contributions to the South Louisiana musical styles of swamp pop and Cajun-inflected rhythm and blues. Growing up in the heart of Cajun country, Charles absorbed the rich cultural heritage of his surroundings, which would heavily influence his songwriting and sound.

Charles gained notable fame for penning the rock 'n' roll classic "See You Later, Alligator," which was popularized by Bill Haley & His Comets in the mid-1950s. His earthy, laid-back style and ability to craft songs with a natural blend of R&B and country elements made him a songwriter's songwriter, respected by his peers even if he didn't attain widespread public recognition. Throughout his career, Charles wrote for artists such as Fats Domino and Clarence "Frogman" Henry, further imprinting his thoughtful lyricism and hooks in the fabric of American music. His self-titled album, "Bobby Charles," released in 1972 and featuring contributions from members of The Band, notably marked a high point in his recording career. Later in life, Charles continued to write and record, encapsulating his talent for storytelling and melody in albums such as "Homemade Songs" and "Last Train To Memphis." Bobby Charles passed away on January 14, 2010, but left behind a timeless legacy of music that continues to resonate with new generations of listeners.
