Born on January 10, 1951, in San Antonio, Texas, Escovedo emerged from a musically rich family—he is the brother of percussionist Pete Escovedo and uncle to drummer Sheila E. His music career began with the San Francisco punk band The Nuns in the 1970s. In the 1980s, he co-founded Rank and File, which contributed significantly to the alternative country movement. Later, he formed the rock-oriented band True Believers. However, it is his solo career that has truly defined his artistic journey.
Since the release of his solo debut, "Gravity," in 1992, Escovedo has been lauded for his deeply personal songwriting and his ability to seamlessly blend various musical traditions into a sound uniquely his own. Throughout his solo career, he has earned critical acclaim and a devoted fan base, grappling with subjects such as his Latino heritage, love, loss, and his experiences as a musician. Albums like "The Crossing" and "Burn Something Beautiful" highlight his continued evolution as an artist, showcasing his storytelling prowess and his willingness to experiment with new sounds and collaborations. Escovedo’s music resonates with a sense of history, yet remains forward-looking, a testament to his enduring artistry in the landscape of American music.
