Rova Saxophone Quartet

Rova Saxophone Quartet is an avant-garde ensemble that has been pushing the boundaries of chamber music and jazz since its inception in 1977. Based in San Francisco, the quartet is known for its innovative approach to composition and improvisation, primarily using the rich timbral palette of four saxophones. The members—Bruce Ackley (soprano sax), Steve Adams (alto sax), Larry Ochs (tenor sax), and Jon Raskin (baritone sax)—have not only sustained a remarkable ensemble synergy over the decades but have also collaborated with a diverse range of artists, exploring intersections with other genres and art forms.

Throughout its extensive career, Rova Saxophone Quartet has produced a significant body of work that is characterized by an endless curiosity and a fearless exploration of the sonic possibilities of the saxophone. Their most recent releases, such as "The Circumference of Reason" and "In Transverse Time," showcase the group's continued commitment to creating music that is both challenging and accessible, revealing a band that remains tightly knitted and dynamic in their performance. Previous works like "No Favorites!"—a tribute to Lawrence "Butch" Morris and his conduction system—highlight their versatility and willingness to experiment with structure and conduction techniques, while "The Celestial Septet," a collaboration with the Nels Cline Singers, underscores their affinity for crossing genre lines and creating unexpected musical dialogues. Rova's unyielding pursuit of new sonic territories has secured them a dedicated following and an esteemed place within the pantheon of avant-garde jazz ensembles.
