Ministry is an American industrial metal band founded in Chicago in 1981 by frontman and sole original member Al Jourgensen. Initially, the band was linked to the synth-pop and new wave movements but underwent a drastic transformation in style, culminating in the gritty, harsh sounds of industrial metal that became their signature in the late 1980s. They rose to prominence with the release of their seminal album "The Land of Rape and Honey" in 1988, which included cutting-edge use of sampled sounds and heavy, aggressive guitars, marking a departure from their earlier, more synthesized sound.
Throughout the 1990s, Ministry cemented their status as industrial metal pioneers, particularly with the release of "Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed and the Way to Suck Eggs" in 1992, featuring one of their most well-known tracks, "Jesus Built My Hotrod." Their music frequently contains a blend of ferocious guitar riffs, electronic elements, and politically charged lyrics. Despite numerous lineup changes, breakups, and reunions, Al Jourgensen has kept Ministry relevant and active, as evidenced by recent releases like "Moral Hygiene" and the ever-evolving live sets captured in "Live Necronomicon." Ministry's influence can be felt across multiple genres and has inspired countless bands in the industrial and metal music scenes.
