Evgeny Svetlanov

Evgeny Svetlanov was one of Russia's most revered conductors and a passionate champion of Russian classical music. Born in 1928, he rose to prominence in the mid-20th century and became known for his richly expressive interpretations, especially of works by composers like Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Glazunov. He served as principal conductor of the USSR State Symphony Orchestra for decades, crafting deeply emotional performances that brought out the soul of the Russian repertoire.

Svetlanov wasn't just a conductor—he was also a composer and pianist, which added a unique layer of insight to his interpretations. His recordings, especially of Myaskovsky’s complete symphonies, are considered benchmarks for Russian orchestral music. Whether on the podium or in the studio, Svetlanov had a flair for sweeping romanticism and dramatic flair, making his legacy a treasured part of 20th-century classical music.
