The Time, also known as Morris Day and The Time, is an American musical group that was most prominent in the early to mid-1980s. They are best known for their funky, upbeat dance tracks and their close association with music icon Prince. The band was originally formed in Minneapolis in 1981 and consisted of lead singer Morris Day, guitarist Jesse Johnson, bassist Terry Lewis, keyboardists Jimmy Jam and Monte Moir, drummer Jellybean Johnson, and Jerome Benton, who provided comic antics and valet/dancer services onstage.
The Time's music is a blend of soulful funk and dance pop, which was heavily influenced by Prince, who helped put the group together and wrote most of the music on their first two albums. Even though the band members were capable musicians and songwriters in their own right, Prince's guiding hand shaped the band's early sound, leading to hits like "Jungle Love" and "The Bird." After disbanding in 1984 amid internal tensions and the pursuit of solo careers—most notably by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who became superstar producers—the band has reunited several times. Their discography, though sporadic, continues to be celebrated, as evidenced by the remastered releases like "Cool, Pt. 1," "Pandemonium," and the expanded edition of their self-titled debut album, which pay homage to their lasting influence in the funk-pop genre.
