Cynthia Johnston Turner is a renowned conductor, clinician, and educator with a wide-ranging career across the United States, Canada, Latin America, Asia, and Europe. She currently serves as the Dean of the Faculty of Music at Wilfrid Laurier University, a position she assumed in 2021. Prior to this, she was the Director of Bands at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music, University of Georgia, overseeing the entire band program including the Redcoat Marching Band and leading graduate programs in conducting. Turner has guest-conducted numerous prestigious bands and orchestras, such as the United States Navy Band, Brooklyn Wind Symphony, and the National Youth Wind Ensemble of Great Britain. She actively promotes commissions of new works from leading and emerging composers, with a focus on underrepresented voices.
Turner holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Conducting from the Eastman School of Music, a Master of Education in Music Education from the University of Victoria, and both a Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Education from Queen's University. Her educational background and professional experience have led to several awards and nominations for teaching and leadership, and she is a member of various prominent musical organizations, including the American Bandmasters Association. Turner is also a published author and clinician, known for her innovative rehearsal techniques and service-learning approaches in music performance. In 2023, she was appointed Artistic Director and Conductor of the Wellington Wind Symphony. Her recent work includes recordings and publications with prominent labels.
