Giuseppe De Luca was a renowned Italian baritone born on December 25, 1876, in Rome. He began singing in church choirs as a boy and later received formal training at the Rome Conservatory, supported by a wealthy patron. De Luca made his operatic debut in 1897 as Valentin in Gounod's *Faust* and went on to perform at prestigious venues such as La Scala in Milan and the Royal Opera House in London. He became famous for his smooth legato singing, acting versatility, and a voice noted for its beauty and refined technique rather than sheer volume. De Luca created important roles in world premieres, including Sharpless in Puccini's *Madama Butterfly* and the title role in *Gianni Schicchi*. In 1915, he joined the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he remained a leading baritone for two decades. After retiring from the stage, he taught voice at the Juilliard School until his death in 1950 at the age of 73.
