Andreas Schaerer is a Swiss composer and performer born in 1976. He grew up in the Valais region of the Alps and later moved to Bern and the Emmental area. Schaerer's musical journey began early, with compositions like "Duo for Sewing Machine and Harmonica," and he gained stage experience as a teenage guitarist for the punk band Hector Lives. In 2000, after traveling extensively in South and Central America, he attended the University of Arts in Bern, where he studied singing, improvisation, and composition for six years. Schaerer is known for his versatile vocal techniques, which include sprechgesang, sound imitation, beat-boxing, and operatic coloratura. He performs with various projects, including the sextet Hildegard Learns to Fly and collaborations with notable musicians like Bänz Oester and Lucas Niggli. Schaerer's work spans genres from jazz and freestyle to hip-hop and soundtracks, and he has performed globally across Europe, Russia, China, Japan, and more.
Schaerer has received several prestigious awards, including the ECHO Jazz Award for International Vocalist of the Year in 2015 and multiple ECHO Jazz Awards in 2018. His projects have also won notable prizes, such as the Jazz ZKB prize and the BMW World-Jazz Award. In 2015, his symphonic piece "The Big Wig" premiered at the Lucerne Festival.
