The Sonora Pine

The Sonora Pine was a short-lived yet influential band that emerged from the fertile indie rock soil of the mid-1990s. A project helmed by former Rodan guitarist Tara Jane O'Neil, The Sonora Pine represented a quieter, more contemplative side of the post-rock spectrum, focusing on nuanced arrangements and the interplay of texture and melody. With Tara Jane O'Neil providing both vocals and bass, the band's lineup included Sean Meadows on guitar and violin, who was known for his work with June of 44, as well as James Canty on guitar and keyboards, and Ryan Hembrey on bass.

Their self-titled debut album, "The Sonora Pine," released in 1996, was a testimony to the band's ability to harness a subdued intensity, crafting songs that featured rich instrumentals and poetic lyricism. By the time they released their follow-up album "II" in 1997, The Sonora Pine had refined their sound, creating an intimate and atmospheric experience that was both reflective and resonant with the indie scene's shifting tastes towards more experimental sounds. However, the band dissolved not long after, leaving behind a legacy encapsulated in these two releases which have since garnered cult status. Years later, the album "II" was given a remaster, allowing both new listeners and longtime fans to rediscover the captivating spaces woven by the band's deft musical dynamics.
