Crime & the City Solution is an eclectic rock band that has garnered a devoted cult following since its inception in the late 1970s. Initially formed in Sydney, Australia by singer-songwriter Simon Bonney, the band went through several incarnations and geographical relocations, settling at various times in Melbourne, London, and Berlin. Their music cannot be easily pigeonholed, blending elements of post-punk, blues, folk, and avant-garde rock. The band’s atmospheric soundscapes are marked by Bonney's distinct, emotive vocal style and the layered, often cinematic qualities of their instrumentation.
Throughout their career, Crime & the City Solution's lineup saw various influential members come and go, including members of The Birthday Party and These Immortal Souls. Despite their shifting assembly, the band maintained a consistent output in the 1980s and early '90s, with critically acclaimed albums such as "Room Of Lights" (1986) and "Shine" (1988). After a hiatus, the band re-emerged with "American Twilight" in 2013, retaining their dramatic storytelling and sonic intensity while reflecting on contemporary societal themes. "The Adversary" (1993) was recorded live at the Berlin Independence Days and showcases the band's dynamic live performances. Though their recording activity has been sporadic, Crime & the City Solution has left an indelible mark on the post-punk landscape, influencing numerous artists with their brooding and evocative style.
