Antonio Scotti

Antonio Scotti was a renowned Italian baritone born on January 25, 1866, in Naples, Italy. Initially destined for the priesthood by his family, Scotti instead pursued a career in opera. He received early vocal training from Esther Trifari-Paganini and Vincenzo Lombardi. Scotti made his debut in 1889 at Malta's Theatre Royal, performing the role of Amonasro in Giuseppe Verdi's *Aida*. He went on to gain extensive experience singing in various Italian venues, as well as in Spain, Portugal, Russia, and South America.

Scotti's career highlights include his debut at La Scala in Milan in 1898 as Hans Sachs in *Die Meistersinger*, and his American debut in Chicago in 1899. He became a principal artist at the New York Metropolitan Opera, where he performed for over 33 seasons, earning acclaim for his interpretations of Donizetti's bel canto and Verdi's operas. Scotti also performed at London's Covent Garden and formed his own opera company in 1919. His final performance at the Met was in 1933, after which he returned to Italy, where he passed away on February 26, 1936.
