Tanya Tomkins

Tanya Tomkins is a versatile and highly respected cellist known for her captivating interpretations of both historical and modern repertoire, particularly the Bach Cello Suites, which she has recorded and performed extensively to acclaim. Equally at home on baroque and modern instruments, she has performed at prestigious venues across the United States, Canada, and Europe, including New York’s Le Poisson Rouge, the Frick Collection, and the Concertgebouw Kleine Zaal in Amsterdam. Alongside her performance career, Tanya is co-founder and director of the Valley of the Moon Music Festival in Sonoma, and is passionate about mentoring the next generation as a frequent teacher at institutions like Juilliard and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

Tanya’s background includes studies with the renowned cellist Anner Bylsma at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, where she earned a soloist’s diploma in 1987. In addition to her leadership and educational roles, she has been a principal cellist for the San Francisco Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and the Portland Baroque Orchestra for two decades, and is also an active chamber musician, working with ensembles such as the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble and the Delphi Trio. Her collaborative spirit and dedication to both early music and contemporary works make her a standout presence in the classical music world.
