Jo Stafford

Jo Stafford, born on November 12, 1917, in Coalinga, California, was one of the most versatile and respected vocalists of the mid-twentieth century. Starting her career in the late 1930s with the group the Pied Pipers, Stafford gained recognition for her pure, soothing voice and her proficiency in a variety of genres, including pop, jazz, and traditional ballads. During World War II, her music brought comfort to the troops overseas, and she quickly became known as “GI Jo” for her popularity among service members.

Over her illustrious career, Stafford accumulated numerous hits and worked with famed bandleaders and musicians, including Tommy Dorsey and Johnny Mercer. She enjoyed success both as a member of ensembles and as a solo artist, garnishing her reputation with a string of chart-topping songs. In the 1950s, she earned further acclaim by exploring her interest in American folk music, releasing albums like "American Folk Songs" and "Songs of Scotland," which showcased her artistry and vocal adaptability. Although many of her releases like "Night Before Christmas" and "Silent Night" resonate with timeless quality, Stafford decided to retire from the music industry in the early 1960s, leaving behind a legacy characterized by a catalog of music that continued to be cherished by fans. Jo Stafford passed away on July 16, 2008, but her contributions to music live on, with collections like "The Ultimate Capitol Collection" ensuring new audiences discover her captivating voice and enduring charm.
