Henry Balfour Gardiner was an English composer, teacher, and conductor who lived from 1877 to 1950. He's best known for his choral works, particularly his "Evening Hymn," which has become a staple in the Anglican church music repertoire. Gardiner was part of the English musical renaissance of the early 20th century, alongside composers like Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst.
Though he composed in various genres, including orchestral and piano works, Gardiner was notoriously self-critical and destroyed many of his compositions. He eventually gave up composing altogether to focus on conducting and supporting other musicians. Despite his limited output, his surviving works, especially his choral pieces, are still performed and admired today for their rich harmonies and evocative qualities.
