Sampaguita, whose real name is Tessy Alfonso, is a renowned Pinoy rock singer from the Philippines. Active during the 1970s and 1980s, she is often referred to as the "Queen of Filipino rock music." Her career began as a model under then-First Lady Imelda Marcos' 'Bagong Anyo' program, where she was discovered by her future husband, Nilo Santos. Her stage name was coined by percussionist Nick Boogie, inspired by the national flower of the Philippines. Sampaguita released several successful albums, including her self-titled debut in 1978 and "Nosi Ba Lasi" in 1989, which featured hit singles that remain classics in Filipino music.
Sampaguita's music career was marked by her powerful performances and iconic songs like "Bonggahan" and "Nosi Ba Lasi." She took a hiatus from the music scene in the 1990s but returned to the stage in 2010 for a concert at the Araneta Coliseum. Sampaguita has been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Awit Award for Dangal ng Musikang Pilipino. She is currently based in Parañaque with her family and continues to be celebrated for her contributions to Filipino rock music.
