Wanda Landowska

Wanda Landowska (1879–1959) was a pioneering Polish harpsichordist whose influence was pivotal in reviving interest in the harpsichord in the early 20th century. Born in Warsaw, Landowska was initially trained as a pianist, studying with Chopin's pupil Aleksander Michałowski and later in Berlin with Moritz Moszkowski. Her musical trajectory took a decisive turn when she discovered her affinity for the harpsichord, an instrument which had fallen out of favor since the 18th century. With a scholarly zeal and a virtuosic talent, Landowska set out to rescue the harpsichord from obscurity, embracing its rich repertoire and the works of Baroque masters such as Bach, Handel, and Couperin.

Landowska's performances and recordings played a critical role in bringing Baroque music into the consciousness of both the public and musicians. She was also a dedicated teacher, conveying her deep knowledge of Baroque performance practices to a new generation of musicians. Her efforts extended beyond performance and pedagogy; she worked with instrument maker Pleyel to develop a modern harpsichord model, which had a profound impact on the construction of contemporary harpsichords. Though her interpretations, characterized by their robustness and expressive vigor, may differ from later, more historically informed approaches, Wanda Landowska's tenacious advocacy for the harpsichord secured her legacy as one of the most influential keyboard musicians of the 20th century. Her recordings, a valuable treasure trove of early music interpretation, continue to educate and inspire, ensuring that her indelible mark on the musical world resonates well beyond her lifetime.
