Joachim Raff (1822–1882) was a German-Swiss composer who was highly respected in his time but later fell into relative obscurity. A prolific composer, Raff wrote symphonies, chamber music, piano works, and choral pieces, displaying a rich Romantic style influenced by Mendelssohn, Liszt, and Wagner. Early in his career, he worked closely with Franz Liszt, assisting in orchestrations, but he eventually made a name for himself as a composer in his own right. His symphonies, particularly the Symphony No. 5 "Lenore," were well-regarded during the 19th century. Though his fame faded in the 20th century, recent recordings and revivals have sparked renewed interest in his music.
