Transylvania State Philharmonic Orchestra

The Transylvania State Philharmonic Orchestra, originally founded as the Cluj State Philharmonic Orchestra in 1955, is a renowned symphonic ensemble based in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Under the initial guidance of Maestro Antonin Ciolan, a disciple of Arthur Nikisch and Hans von Bülow, the orchestra quickly rose to prominence within Romania's cultural landscape. Ciolan's legacy was continued by notable conductors such as Emil Simon and Erich Bergel, who further refined the orchestra's sound and expanded its repertoire to include late Romantic and 20th-century music. Over the years, the orchestra has toured extensively across Europe and collaborated with various artists, including a notable tour with Deep Purple in 2000. The Transylvania State Philharmonic is also known for its extensive discography, featuring works from Baroque to contemporary music.

Today, the orchestra remains a significant cultural institution in Romania, with a rich history of performances and collaborations. It has been involved in numerous festivals, including the annual Mozart Festival since 1999. The orchestra's repertoire includes a wide range of classical music, from the complete symphonies of Brahms and Bruckner to works by Debussy, Ravel, and Vivaldi. With over 120 recordings, it boasts one of the largest discographies among Romanian orchestras, showcasing the talents of both local and international artists. The orchestra continues to thrive under the leadership of its current principal conductors, maintaining its position as a leading symphonic ensemble in Eastern Europe.
