Unknown Mortal Orchestra (UMO) is an eclectic and critically-acclaimed indie rock band, known for its fusion of psychedelic soundscapes, lo-fi production, and R&B influences. Originally the solo project of New Zealand-American musician and songwriter Ruban Nielson, the band was formed following the unexpected success of the track "Ffunny Ffrends," which Nielson uploaded to Bandcamp in 2010. This spurred the creation of the band with members including Jacob Portrait on bass, Quincy McCrary on keys, and Ruban's brother Kody Nielson on drums. Shortly after, they released their self-titled debut album in 2011, which was celebrated for its innovative sound.
Over the years, Unknown Mortal Orchestra continued to push the envelope with subsequent releases like "II" in 2013, marking a progression in their sound and earning them a wider fan base with hits like "So Good at Being in Trouble." Their third album, "Multi-Love" released in 2015, delved into polyamorous relationships and was noted for its deeper exploration of personal themes, matched with increasingly sophisticated production. Their 2018 full-length release, "Sex & Food," presented a blend of existential musings and political commentary, while keeping true to the idiosyncratic funk and psychedelic rock foundation they are known for. The instrumental album "IC-01 Hanoi," recorded during the "Sex & Food" sessions, further showcases the band's willingness to experiment and defy genre constraints. The ongoing series of instrumental "SB" releases, like "SB-10" and "SB-09," highlights the band's creative restlessness and commitment to continuous exploration and growth in their sound.
