Josh Graves

Josh Graves was not only a remarkable solo artist but also a transformative figure in bluegrass music, most well-known for his pioneering work with the Dobro. Born Burkett Howard Graves on September 27, 1927, in Tellico Plains, Tennessee, he was lovingly nicknamed "Buck" and later became famous as Josh Graves. His career took a pivotal turn in 1955 when he joined Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs, and the Foggy Mountain Boys, where his innovative Dobro playing would leave an indelible mark on the genre.

"Uncle Josh," as he became fondly referred to, was instrumental in popularizing the resonator guitar, affectionately known as the Dobro, within the bluegrass community. By incorporating a bluesy style into his playing, he diversified the traditional bluegrass sound, impacting fellow musicians and the evolution of the genre. Graves enjoyed an extensive career, both as a collaborator and a solo artist, with significant albums such as "Sultan of Slide" and "King of the Dobro" that showcased his virtuosity. His legacy is not only in his recordings, including "Sing Away the Pain" and "Happy Times," but also in the countless players he influenced, who continue to revere his contributions to bluegrass and country music. Graves passed away on September 30, 2006, but left behind a body of work that cemented him as a true living legend in American roots music.
