Eiji Nakayama

Eiji Nakayama is a **distinguished Japanese jazz bassist** born on November 21, 1948, in Sapporo, Hokkaido. He started his musical career as a vocalist in his late teens before transitioning to bass. After performing as a jazz bassist throughout Hokkaido based in Sapporo, he moved to Tokyo in 1979 and released his debut album "North Plain" in 1982, which established him as one of Japan's most respected bassists. His music is characterized by clear tones and is often described as a unique blend of strength and emotion influenced by traditional Japanese music, earning him international recognition.

Throughout his career, Nakayama has collaborated with some of jazz's finest musicians, including participating in Elvin Jones' Jazz Machine (1982-1993), touring as a duo with pianist Don Friedman, and performing with drummer Eliot Zigmund. He formed the Eiji Nakayama New York Quartet in 1991 with influential New York jazz musicians, releasing albums like "Days of a Dream," "Romantic Blue," and "Synchronicity." Beyond performing, Nakayama has been prolific as a composer and arranger, contributing to numerous albums and releasing his autobiography "Kita no Daichi kara" in 2002.
