Malinky

Malinky is a Scottish folk band, renowned for its prowess in interpreting traditional Scottish songs as well as composing original material in the traditional style. Formed in 1998, during Edinburgh's vibrant session scene, the band initially included Karine Polwart, Steve Byrne, Mark Dunlop, and Jon Bews. Over the years, the lineup has evolved, with members coming and going, but the core ethos of Malinky's commitment to Scottish traditional music has remained steadfast.

The band's discography underscores a journey of maturation and deep exploration of Scotland's rich musical heritage. Their album "Last Leaves" (2000) marked an auspicious debut, quickly cementing their reputation as a band with a fresh, yet authentic take on folk music. The evolution of their sound is evident in "3 Ravens" (2002), which showcased their adept storytelling through song. Malinky continued to gain critical acclaim with the albums "The Unseen Hours" (2005), "Flower & Iron" (2008), and "Far Better Days" (2015), each release further enriching the tapestry of their musical narrative. With "Handsel" (2019), a double CD marking their 20th anniversary featuring a blend of new material and live recordings of fan favourites, Malinky has shown that they've not only preserved the traditions from which they draw inspiration but have also made a significant contribution to the living history of Scottish folk music.
