Serpentwithfeet, whose real name is Josiah Wise, has emerged as one of the most unique voices in contemporary music, blending elements of R&B, gospel, classical, and experimental sounds into a genre-defying fusion. With an expressively rich and tremulous tenor, Wise captivates listeners through deeply personal lyrics and avant-garde aesthetics, exploring themes of love, identity, and spirituality. As a queer Black artist, he often channels his own experiences into his music, offering an intimate and radical perspective on conventional narratives around romance and human connection.
Hailing from Baltimore and now based in Brooklyn, serpentwithfeet gained attention with his 2016 EP "Blisters," which established his artful melding of orchestral music with electronic production, under the guidance of Icelandic composer Björk. His first full-length album "soil" followed in 2018, showing a raw and hauntingly beautiful exploration of vulnerability. With the release of "DEACON" in 2021, serpentwithfeet presented a warmer, more celebratory approach that resonated with both critics and fans. It features soulful tracks that celebrate Black, queer love and joy, embodying a softer, yet equally compelling embodiment of his artistry. His projects such as "DEACON'S Grove" and singles like "Fellowship," further solidify his commitment to crafting deeply emotive and spiritually rich narratives while continuously challenging and expanding his sonic palette.
