Kiros Alemayehu was a legendary Ethiopian Tigrigna singer and songwriter born in 1948 (1940 E.C.) in the Saesi Tsaedaemba district of the Tigray region. Known for popularizing Tigrigna music beyond its traditional audience, Kiros was a prolific artist who wrote and performed songs that resonated deeply with both Tigrinya and non-Tigrinya speaking Ethiopians. Before launching his solo career with Ras Theatre in the early 1980s, he served as an assistant trainer for the Tigray Musical Troupe. His talents extended beyond singing to playing traditional instruments like the Kirar, and he was also recognized as a cultural researcher and dancer. Some of his well-loved songs include “Anguay Fisis,” “Fililiy,” and “Selam Hawa.” Kiros passed away in 1994 due to intestinal complications, but his legacy continues to influence Ethiopian music and culture, with a memorial library being built near his birthplace to honor his contributions.
