Lowell Mason was an American composer, music teacher, and hymn writer who lived from 1792 to 1872. He is best known for composing the hymn tune "Nearer, My God, to Thee," which was famously played by the band on the Titanic as it sank. Mason also played a significant role in the development of music education in the United States, and he helped to establish music as a core subject in public schools.
