Gillan was a British hard rock band formed in 1978 by legendary Deep Purple vocalist Ian Gillan after his stint with the Ian Gillan Band. Shifting from the jazz fusion style of his previous group, Gillan embraced a heavier, more hard rock and heavy metal sound that resonated with the rising New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) movement. The band went through several lineup changes but featured key members like guitarist Bernie Tormé, bassist John McCoy, keyboardist Colin Towns, and drummers Mick Underwood and later Mark Nauseef.
Gillan released a string of successful albums between 1978 and 1982, including hits like Mr Universe, Glory Road, and Magic. Their energetic live shows and Ian Gillan’s iconic vocals earned them a strong fan base, particularly in the UK and parts of Europe. Although the band disbanded in 1982 when Ian Gillan rejoined Deep Purple, their music remains a vibrant chapter in the story of classic British hard rock.
