Dirty Three

Dirty Three is an instrumental trio from Australia known for their emotive and evocative music that defies easy categorization, blending elements of rock, folk, and classical music with an experimental edge. Formed in Melbourne in 1992, the group consists of Warren Ellis on violin, Mick Turner on guitar, and Jim White on drums. Their often-improvised performances are marked by Ellis's intense and passionate violin playing, Turner's atmospheric guitar work, and White's fluid and dynamic drumming. Even without lyrics, Dirty Three's music communicates profound emotional narratives, earning them a dedicated following.

The band's discography traces a journey through a distinctive soundscape that has matured and evolved while maintaining a consistent core of raw emotion and sonic exploration. Their 1998 release "Ocean Songs" is one of their most celebrated works, offering a serene yet melancholic take on their signature sound. Dirty Three has not limited their creative output to studio albums, also participating in projects such as "In The Fishtank 7," a collaborative EP series. Over the years, members have also been involved in various side projects and collaborations, with Ellis notably contributing to Nick Cave's backing band, The Bad Seeds, and other soundtracks and scores. The band's most recent release at the time of this writing is "Toward the Low Sun," which came out in 2012, exemplifying their ongoing capacity to create haunting and beautiful soundscapes that resonate with listeners around the globe.
