Old Man Gloom

Old Man Gloom is an experimental sludge metal supergroup with an enigmatic presence in the heavy music scene. Formed in 1999, the group was originally a collaboration among core members Aaron Turner (ISIS, Sumac) on guitar and vocals, Santos Montano on drums, Nate Newton (Converge, Doomriders) on bass and vocals, and Caleb Scofield (Cave In, Zozobra) on bass and vocals until his tragic passing in 2018. Old Man Gloom's musical approach blends crushing riffs, ambient noise, and a penchant for droning heaviness, overlaid with Turner's distinctive growls. Thematically, the band frequently explores motifs related to nature, mythology, and the human condition, presenting a sonic tapestry that is both darkly atmospheric and aggressively confrontational.

As prolific creatives, Old Man Gloom has consistently defied expectations with releases that are both sonically and conceptually ambitious. Their repertoire includes critically-acclaimed works like "The Ape of God" I and II, which were originally part of a playful ruse involving the simultaneous release of two albums with the same name to confuse and bewilder fans and critics alike. Old Man Gloom continued to forge their path with other notable releases like "NO" and "Seminar III: Zozobra," dedicated to the Santa Fe effigy, Zozobra, reflecting a sublime mix of artistic self-reference and myth. 2018's “Seminar VIII: Light of Meaning” and “Seminar IX: Darkness of Being” served as a poignant continuation of the band's legacy, following Scofield's death, with their haunting soundscapes offering a meditation on grief and resilience. Old Man Gloom's extensive collection of live and rare recordings, such as "Zozoburn," further cement their standing as a formidable force within the avant-garde metal community.
