james chance

James Chance was a fiery saxophonist and provocateur who carved out a niche in New York’s late-’70s no wave scene with his band The Contortions. Known for his chaotic live shows that blended punk aggression, funky grooves, and free-jazz skronk, Chance became infamous for literally climbing onto (or into) audiences, weaponizing his alto sax like a punk-rock James Brown. His 1978 debut *Buy the Contortions* remains a cult classic, capturing his "punk-jazz" chaos, while later projects like James White and the Blacks flirted with disco irony. Recent releases like *Soul Exorcism Redux* (raw early demos) and live recordings from CBGB’s heyday keep his confrontational spirit alive for new fans. Chance kept gigging and recording his signature squeals until his death in 2021, leaving behind a legacy of danceable disorder.
