Mikhail Gantvarg is a renowned Russian violinist and conductor, born on February 25, 1947, in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). He began playing the violin at the age of six and made his formal debut at age eleven. Gantvarg is a graduate of the Leningrad Conservatory, completing his postgraduate studies in 1972. He gained international recognition early in his career, winning an award at the prestigious N. Paganini International Contest in Italy in 1967. This recognition led to numerous tours across the world, including performances in the United States, Germany, Italy, and many other countries.
Gantvarg is perhaps best known for founding the "Saint Petersburg Soloists" String Ensemble in 1987, of which he remains the music director. His extensive discography includes about 40 CDs featuring works by Mozart, Vivaldi, Shostakovich, and Bach. He has been honored with titles such as Distinguished Artist of Russia (1991) and People's Artist of Russia (2004). From 2007 to 2011, Gantvarg headed the Violin and Viola Department at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, also serving as the conservatory's rector from 2011 to 2015. His recent releases reflect his broad musical interests, particularly in classical composers like Mozart and Vivaldi.
