Rhymefest, born Che Smith, is a Grammy Award-winning rapper, songwriter, and activist from Chicago. He first gained widespread recognition co-writing Kanye West’s hit “Jesus Walks,” which earned them a Grammy for Best Rap Song in 2005. Known for his thoughtful lyrics and socially conscious themes, Rhymefest released his debut album Blue Collar in 2006, which featured the standout single “Brand New” with Kanye West. The album blended witty punchlines, soul-infused beats, and political commentary, establishing him as a distinctive voice in hip-hop.
Beyond his solo work, Rhymefest has remained deeply involved in community activism and arts education in Chicago, co-founding organizations like Donda’s House (now Art of Culture, Inc.) to mentor young creatives. He also ventured into politics, running for Chicago’s City Council in 2011. Rhymefest continues to blend his passions for music, storytelling, and service, using his platform to advocate for social change.
