Blue Scholars is a Seattle-based hip-hop duo formed in 2002 at the University of Washington by MC Geo (George Quibuyen) and DJ Sabzi (Saba Mohajerjasbi). Their music is deeply rooted in issues of social justice, political activism, and community engagement, reflecting the diverse influences of their background and surroundings. Geo's reflective lyrics and Sabzi's innovative production style combine elements of jazz, world music, and the duo’s shared love of classic hip-hop to create a sound that's both introspective and dynamic.
Armed with a passion for grassroots movements and the struggles of immigrant and working-class communities, Blue Scholars quickly became a pillar of the Pacific Northwest's underground hip-hop scene. They released their self-titled debut album "Blue Scholars" in 2004, establishing a sonic and thematic blueprint they would continue to evolve with releases such as "The Long March EP" (2005) and the politically charged "Bayani Redux" (2007), which solidified their reputation for substantive lyrical content matched with lush musical soundscapes. Their inventive EP "Oof!" (2009) showcased a broader sonic palette, while "Cinemetropolis" (2011) marked the group’s most ambitious project to date, with a successful independent release funded by a Kickstarter campaign. Known for electrifying live performances and a deep connection with their listeners, Blue Scholars remain an influential voice in the quest for social change through the power of hip-hop.
