Sixten Ehrling was a renowned Swedish conductor and pianist, born on April 3, 1918, in Malmö, Sweden. He studied piano and violin at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm and was awarded the prestigious Jenny Lind Scholarship in 1939. Ehrling began his career as a repetiteur at the Royal Swedish Opera and later worked under Karl Böhm at the Dresden State Opera. He became the music director of the Royal Swedish Opera from 1953 to 1960, during which he collaborated with notable singers like Jussi Björling and Birgit Nilsson. Ehrling's tenure ended due to criticism of his leadership style, leading him to move to the United States.
In the U.S., Ehrling served as the principal conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra from 1963 to 1973, conducting over 700 works, including 24 world premieres. He also taught at the Juilliard School and worked with the Denver Symphony and San Antonio Symphony. Known for his vast musical knowledge and sharp temperament, Ehrling was celebrated for his clarity and perfectionism on the podium. He conducted a wide range of repertoire, including opera and symphonic music, and was one of the last conductors to have known both Stravinsky and Sibelius personally. Ehrling passed away on February 13, 2005, in New York City.
