Chamber Orchestra of Europe

The Chamber Orchestra of Europe (COE), recognised as one of the preeminent ensembles on the international stage, was founded in 1981 by a group of young musicians graduating from the European Union Youth Orchestra. The ensemble distinguishes itself with its democratic governance and the collaborative spirit among its members, who are drawn from across Europe. The COE operates without a permanent conductor, which allows it to work with a diverse range of the world’s greatest conductors and soloists, resulting in fresh interpretations of a wide-ranging and ambitious repertoire. Its members retain their connections to their respective national training and performing organisations but come together for specific tours, chamber music projects, and residency periods.

Over the years, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe has forged particularly close relationships with notable conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, and Yannick Nézet-Séguin, which has led to acclaimed recordings and performances. Their discography showcases a proficiency in a broad spectrum of classical music, ranging from the opulent symphonies of Beethoven to the intricate concertos of Mozart, and highlighting the romantic works of Schumann and Schubert. The ensemble’s dedication to excellence has earned it numerous international awards, including the prestigious Gramophone Award for "Orchestra of the Year" in 2017. Their recent releases continue to underline the orchestra's passion and precision in interpreting the works of both the core classical and romantic repertoires as well as compositions by lesser-known composers.
