Displaying his prodigious talent early on, Red quickly became a prominent figure in the burgeoning jazz scene. Throughout his career, Allen is known to have played with some of the most prestigious names in jazz, including King Oliver, Fletcher Henderson, and the Luis Russell Orchestra.

Allen's style was distinctive, characterized by his expressive and often adventurous play. His ability to blend the harmonic innovations of the swing era with the fervor of New Orleans jazz made his work particularly compelling. Allen ventured into various forms of jazz, including swing, dixieland, and mainstream jazz, performing with the likes of Jelly Roll Morton and Sidney Bechet. Notable recordings such as the Berlin Jazz Concert in 1959 showcase his prowess as a live performer and his ability to captivate an audience. Allen's influence extended beyond his life, and he left an indelible mark on the world of jazz, influencing generations of musicians with his vibrant and innovative approach to the trumpet. He passed away on April 17, 1967, but his music continues to be celebrated and rediscovered by new generations of jazz enthusiasts.
