Samaris was an Icelandic electronic music trio formed in 2011, gaining recognition for their ethereal fusion of glacial electronica, minimal beats, and haunting vocal melodies, often intertwining the evocative chill of their native Icelandic landscapes. The group consisted of Jófríður Ákadóttir, known for her enchanting voice and for playing the clarinet; Þórður Kári Steinþórsson, who was the electronic architect working under the alias Doddi; and Áslaug Rún Magnúsdóttir, who also contributed with the clarinet and added depth to the trio's distinctive sound with her melodic contributions.
Their discography is a testament to their evolution and dedication to creating a unique sonic experience. They started with their eponymous debut EP "Samaris" in 2011 and followed with their first full-length album "Silkidrangar" in 2013, which they later revisited with "Silkidrangar Sessions" in 2014 to offer an alternative, more intimate take on the album's tracks. Each release solidified their presence in the Nordic music scene and garnered an international following mesmerized by their otherworldly music. Their latest work, "Black Lights" released in 2016, showcased a maturity in their sound and a shift towards more accessible, rhythmically driven tracks without losing the mystic allure at the heart of their music. Though their work in Samaris has come to an end as the members pursue different musical paths, the band's legacy continues to glow in the dark like the shimmering auroras of their Icelandic home.
